Nothing throws you off your game quite like getting the "your mom is in the hospital" call at work.
They think she's ok but they're keeping her overnight for tests and observation.
She's only 45, this shouldn't be happening yet.Current Mood: really fucking worried

Kanye West, your new album is the shit but now is definitely not the time to launch into a "LOL BUSH SUX HE HATES BLACKS AND NEW ORLEANS ALSO NO BLOOD FOR OIL!!!11oneeleven~" tirade.
Seriously, if you want to help then shut the fuck up and grab a bucket.
I mean, this is probably the worst crisis in United States history. So what am I hearing? Everybody is blasting the president and Republicans for abandoning the black people. Give me a break. I mean, this is one situation where the blame goes around the whole table. How narrow-minded and partisan can you get to point your finger at only the president or only the Republicans? This was our entire government failing here. It would be like if I started yelling about how this is all Bill Clinton's fault because back in 1996 he did something that directly caused one of the levees to fail. It leaves out 95% of the picture here. Nobody saw it coming until it was too late, and what do I see? I see people in the hospital dying because the diesel isn't being released; I'm seeing people kill each other over bags of ice; I'm seeing looting on a scale that I've never witnessed before; I'm seeing a completely non-existant effort on the People's part to put pressure on our government officials to hold them accountable for this hideously mismanaged rescue effort. Meanwhile, the real heroes-- the people in the street trying to set things right-- aren't getting the support they need from the higher-ups. This goes far beyond politics.
It makes me fucking sick.
But what can I do, you ask? I can't get down there and I'm not sure how to go about donating money or other resources. Well, there's an easy way now. Hop down to your nearest Best Buy and ask to donate to the American Red Cross. Every dollar you donate (up to $1,000,000) will be matched by Best Buy. You drop $10, New Orleans gets $20. It's easy. DO IT.
Are they trying to make me lose all hope in humanity? Or this country? |

Well, last week saw the arrival and subsequent installation of the very first serious performance modification to my Focus.
My custom-programmed aftermarket ECU chip arrived a week and a half ago and I've been playing with it and let me tell you, it's like I've got an entirely different car. Here is what is different:
-Speed governor raised from 108mph -Rev limiter raised to 7,200rpms -Advanced timing to take advantage of higher-octane gasoline (I'm running 92 octane!) -EGR system disabled -Earlier fan activation
Like I said, it's like a completely different car. It's got a lot more pep and it can really cruise now. My next planned modifications will be better spark plug wires, a bigger throttle body + short air intake, and a new exhaust system. Next summer could see a turbocharger and a suspension overhaul.

I just worked 14.5 hours straight. Oof.
On the plus side, the store got a brand new phone system tonight. 95% of the store is now using VOIP! How cool is that?
For those of you with the blank stares, it's very cool.

Alright, here's the full story:
On Monday night a massive storm passed over Ottertail Lake in northwest Minnesota, the lake on which my cabins are situated. The storm spawned somewhere between 6 and 8 tornadoes that pretty much trashed everything everwhere on the lake. My dad and uncle went up to assess the damage on Monday night and my brother amd I and our other uncle (with family) got up there yesterday morning. From about 9AM to 8PM it was nonstop cleaning and moving shit. I just got home about an hour ago and last I heard the power has yet to be restored on our side of the lake (eastern shore). Luckily though, my uncle was able to purchase a nice generator that we were able to get going yesterday evening so we could keep the refrigerator going. Our water was still out as well but everybody brought water which was a good thing because it was way hot yesterday.
Here's the lowdown on our situation:
-The red cabin has about half of its roof blown off -Trees are down everywhere -No power -No water -No telephone landline -Our dock is destroyed, including the boat lifts (all aluminum except for our steel pontoon lift which was mysteriously unharmed =P ) -Our Sea Ray cruiser is totaled (it was swamped so the hull is scratched and gouged all over the place and the engine (V6) is more or less shot) -My dad's pontoon was found crashed into our neighbor's dock, but aside from some cosmetic damage it seems to be okay =) -All of the jet skis were recovered, but are really really banged up. The engines seem to be in good shape though, thankfully
I could be missing other things too, but that's the gist of it. I was talking to my dad and uncle and they said that this was the worst storm they've ever seen up here and they've been going up here for their entire lives. I was inclined to agree. So far it doesn't sound like anyone died in the storm but it's still early. There was, however, a horrible accident on Tuesday which resulted in the sherrifs blocking off a two-mile stretch of road into town.
I took a lot of pictures and I'll put them up when I get home from work tonight.
But goddamn, does this ever suck.

Fuck.
So a enormous storm passed through Ottertail county last night, where my cabin is.
So far the damage is as follows:
-Damage to our red cabin (we have two cabins on the property) -Possible but uncomfirmed damage to our new cabin -Our dock setup is destroyed -My uncle's boat is swamped -My dad's pontoon was found almost a quarter mile away beached on the shore, not sure how damaged it is -At least two or three jet skis are feared lost -Downed trees everywhere -My great aunt and uncle's dock is destroyed as well (their cabin is next door to ours) -They also cannot leave because trees are blocking their driveway
My dad and my uncle are driving up there shortly to assess the situation. Any plans for a cabin party this summer are postponed indefinitely if not cancelled.
The storm is also headed this way.
This is fucking depressing.

So hey, it appears that my sister and one of her friends have livejournals and have linked to mine so I'm now making this "Friends Only."
In other news, I've been invited to my friend's bachelor party. It will be 10 hours of driving around in a limo or something and drinking a lot. Suffice it to say, I am looking forward to it.
So here's a car:

In 8 hours I have my last class. I couldn't be more happy. I'm so burned out that it's not even funny. All I want to do is work and chill the fuck out for three months.
Getting back to my favorite topic -cars- it looks like "Operation: Turbofocus of DOOM" is going to be a lot more work than I had originally thought. List of parts include, but is not limited to:
The turbocharger itself Intercooler Higher-capacity fuel injectors New air intake system Upgraded exhaust system Modified exhaust header Upgraded fuel management system Gauges (boost, oil temp, etc)
Not to mention the time it'll take to replace/upgrade all of this and fabricate the numerous small metal brackets and whatnot. This could easily run me upwards of $2,000 but if it works...holy shit. With all of this in place I should be able to squeeze at least 170whp and around 200 lb-ft outta my car.
What does that mean? It means that I will be able to:
Go faster than Warin's Acura RSX (lighter and more power) Compete with (if not beat) Ben's Passat (slightly less power and about 1,000lbs lighter) Give those stupid frat boys in the Mustangs a run for their money (it'll blow their minds when a tiny little Focus launches off the line faster than their goddamn automatic V6 stang) Have more fun driving x 1,000,000

Okay, present and future plans for my car:
Right now: Finish the audio system =D
This summer: TURBOCHARGER
Next summer: New wheels/tires and suspension (stiffer springs, lower 1", sway bars)
Fantasy options: Six-speed manual
If all goes as planned, my tiny Focus could be spitting out about 180whp by my 23rd birthday :-)

Habemus Papem
 Pope Benedict XVI
Wow. As a Catholic, this is the first time in my short life that I've been witness to the whole Papal succession process. I've read about it (11 years of religion class, woo) but it's something completely different to witness firsthand. It's quite incredible but at the same time it's strange. Not in a bad way, but I've only known one pope in my life and it will definitely be strange to see this new guy at the Roman Catholic helm so to speak.
